This piece taught me a lot about perspective. Reporting on my teammates, I had a fixed expectation about what their thoughts would be on this issue. In the interviewing process I quickly learned that the call to action in my story would be much different than I initially planned.

Here I learned that news-worthy stories are often closer than you may think. Nearly everyone has a news worthy story, as long as you are able to ask the right questions, and understand how it connects to a greater national / global picture.

Reporting on this story made me realize that national research can start at the local level. You can learn things about the country from looking at your own city as an example. As well as that, it taught me how to dissect information that was foreign to me, from a source that knew much more than me.

This story forced me to get nimble in my reporting when things didn't go exactly as planned. It also taught me that sometimes you have to be ready for the interview to come to you, rather than the other way around.
